A demon hunter sacrifices everything to be a living weapon against the burning legion, stopping at nothing to save Azeroth. But their power is extremely dangerous, and it takes very little to take a demon hunter too far.
During the events of the scourge wars Silvermoon city was betrayed by the alliance. The corrupt warlord Garithos ordered the high elves be wiped out for consorting with other races such as the naga and night elves as they tried to survive in the ruins of Lordaeron. The high elves under Prince Kael’thas left the alliance and sought out a new future for their people with the naga’s leader, Illidan Stormrage.
Before the war of the ancients Illidan had been a talent sorcerer, and respected the high elve’s highborne ancestry. He welcomed them into his faction as he made a home for his forces in Outland. With the aid of his naga, broken draenei and high elf forces, Illidan was able to seize the black temple from its previous owner, the pit lord Magtheridon.

With the demon defeated he established his new order in the temple, the Illidari. With time to train and plenty of demons around, he set about training a new generation of demon hunters. Far and away the most successful student was a former mage named Varedis Felsoul. The training of a new demon hunter is brutal and the majority of students fail or die. Varedis was the only survivor of his intake.
Not only did he survive, he was one of the greatest demon hunters of his generation, quickly surpassing any veteran Illidan sent to train him. He would later come to train the next wave of initiates. His most important mission was to capture a tome from the shadow council called the Book of Fel Names, this contained valuable information for anyone attacking the legion, giving away the weaknesses of many races of demon.
Varedis absorbed most of the fel tome’s power and knowledge, leaving the book itself intact. The council had no idea they’d been robbed. When adventurers later found and destroyed the tome he was left severely weakened. He was killed during the fall of the Illidari in the black temple. The burning legion saw this as a big victory and an opportunity.

As a demon hunter is partially demon, Varedis’ soul entered the nether and was seized by Kil’Jaeden. Varedis endured years of torture as Kil’Jaeden tried to convert him to willingly join the legion, but demon hunter training is too good for that. If you’ll take your own eyes out to fight demons, you’re prepared to go through a lot.
Demons are patient however, and Kil’Jaeden the deceiver eventually found the answer. How could adventurers have known the tome would be his weakness? The only people who knew were the other demon hunters, it must’ve been his own fellow Illidari. In fact it was the doing of the rebel Altruis the sufferer.
The betrayal was enough and Varedis gave in, he became a willing servant of the legion and a full demon. He and his warglaives were infused with the deceiver's power. The true Illidari now have a new enemy and an opportunity, glaives charged by one of the strongest living demons would be a great prize.
