Before Sargeras became the dark titan, he was a supreme warrior. As his legion invades mortal worlds, he seeks out the best warrior races to corrupt and add to his own forces.

Among his many conquests, the greatest warriors he ever found were the Aldrachi. Members of this race were raised from birth to be warriors. Military service was mandatory for all and began as soon as a child could walk. When the legion first attacked their world the demon’s invasion force was crushed.

The Aldrachi prized weapons about all other possessions, with the greatest warriors being awarded warblades. These blades were made from the unique crystals that formed deep within their world. These gems could absorb energy from the spirits of fallen enemies. As the blades were used they gained more and more power from their victims. Ancient warblades could hold tremendous power and were revered as much as their wielder.

The greatest set of warblades was held by their leader, Toranaar. Toranaar personally mowed down the invading demons by the hundred, draining their souls as he did. Sargeras was deeply impressed and sought to corrupt the Aldrachi into his minions. The Aldrachi however, could not be corrupted. Try as he might, the proud warriors refused to accept the gift, and forcibly corrupting them wasn’t working either.

What the legion can’t corrupt they kill, and despite millions of demons dying in battle the legion eventually won out. The Aldrachi died valiantly, their souls passing on safe from the legion’s corruption. Sargeras himself took on and defeated Toranaar, claiming his peerless warblades for himself.

He kept the blades for millennia, waiting for a worthy wielder to arise. Immortal demons like Sargeras can afford to be very patient. In his travels one of the only other worlds to successfully oppose him was Azeroth, the denizens of Azeroth are corruptible so perhaps one of us could be turned and claim them as his servant. Or perhaps we could steal them.

Demon hunters gained power by draining the souls of defeated demons. Greater demons can even grant them some of their spells on death, enhancing their power even more. The more defensive vengeance demon hunters attack the soul of their enemy directly, so a soul powered weapon would be ideal.

Demon hunters survive on a glaive edge, if they lose their focus and devotion to the cause of Azeroth even a little they can turn and become demons of the legion themselves. This has now happened to a hunter named Caria felsoul, sister to Varedis who now holds the havoc hunter’s glaives. That family has a bad track record. If Caria isn’t stopped she will attack Azeroth sooner or later, so claiming the blades for yourself is a double win.

Azeroth has a long and storied history of war; over the years we’ve learned many unique skills and magics to defend our world. The legion may be coming for us but we have the powers, and now the weapons, to defend our home.
