As we deal with yet another invasion on Azeroth, you might be wondering why everyone wants our world so much. If all these cosmic forces can go anywhere in the universe, why do they want some medieval planet in the back of beyond?
In the early days of the universe there were two forces at play. The light spreads life and order throughout the great dark, while the void spreads death and chaos. While these forces fought it out, other powers began to emerge. From the living worlds created by the light came the Titans, beings of pure order; and from the chaos of the nether came the demons.
Titans are born from world souls, a kind of spirit growing inside a planet. Very few planets get a world soul and they are not required for life. Since these beings are aligned with the light the void wants to destroy them. The void usually operates by corrupting and decaying anything it can find, but a fully grown titan can’t be corrupted by magic. A world soul, however, can.

The void created a race of terrible beings, known as old gods, and sent them out into the great dark to find these titans. They were looking for a needle in the mother of all haystacks however, and the vast majority never found their prey.
Since the titans are born from living worlds, they had a keen interest in tending and shaping the worlds they found. They created a series of nice tidy planets, ripe for the picking by demons. Demons feed on the souls and magic of living creatures, so they took to devouring the planets the titans made. The titans became aware of this and sent their best warrior, Sargeras, out to stop them.
While he was off beating up demons, the titan found a world that had been attacked by the old gods. There was a world soul inside, but it was corrupted and insane. Sargeras felt the terror and nightmares of the child and decided he had to act. He concluded there was no way of saving it, so he raised his gigantic sword and cleaved the planet in two.

When he explained what happened to the other titans, they called him a monster for killing the child. He called them blind to the truth and left the pantheon. Sargeras brooded for a while on the corruption of the void and decided that, ultimately the only way to prevent corruption was to prevent life. He saw the demons he had been fighting as the ideal tool, and seized command of them, creating the burning legion.
The titans meanwhile, had found another world soul, Azeroth. They too found old gods corrupting the soul, but there was still time. The titans tried to simply pull the gods out of the world, but that gravely wounded the soul. The titan bled arcane energies out from the wound; the titans tended the cut, and shaped the pool of energy in the well of eternity. The remaining gods were imprisoned, but kept alive to prevent further damage.
So Azeroth is simply the current battleground of wars that have been waged for eons. The light and the void are fighting over purity and corruption; and the titans and legion are fighting over creation and destruction. For our part the world soul has continued to grow, learning from the life that has grown on her, and now able to communicate with us. So be careful over the example you set in this war, children will listen.
