The legion had attacked the tower of Karazhan, seeking the knowledge and artefacts of the guardian, Medivh. Why did the hero of Azeroth choose such an evil looking place for his house?

After the war of the ancients, it was clear to the legion that outright invasion wasn’t going to work while it still had all its protectors and guardians. Instead they set about corrupting and killing off the races of Azeroth. One of the first agents it sent was Sataiel.

Sataiel wielded Ulthalesh, which affliction warlocks have now taken up. She found a suitable place in the corner of jungle troll lands and set to work. Over a short period she eradicated every troll in the valley, drawing the souls into the scythe and making it even stronger. The purpose of her attack was to start breaking the will of the races of Azeroth, so she had a final strike planned here.

She struck the land around her, drawing the life from everything. Every animal and plant and all life energy in the area was drawn into the scythe, creating Deadwind Pass. The attack had also torn at the leylines beneath the surface, creating a huge magical nexus in the newly formed wasteland.

While this was happening, the guardians of Tirisfal had formed far to the north. They were charged with destroying demon incursions wherever they found them, but this had happened so far from human lands at the time that they didn’t notice. Sataiel had become possessed by her own scythe and now plotted to betray Sargeras, but Sargy didn’t get where he was without good spys and he soon found out. He decided to use one enemy against another.

He granted the current guardian, Scavell, a vision of a terrible evil far to the south. He believed the vision came from his own power and set off to hunt the demon down. He was able to defeat Sataiel and trap her in her own scythe. He sealed it away in a magical vault where it could do no further harm. He had however noticed the power in the dead land, and the council warned all the eastern kingdoms to steer clear.

Centuries later Aegwynn became guardian, and she had plans of her own with the power. She believed the council were mired in old rules and traditions, and decided she could do better. In secret she built the tower of Karazhan over the unstable nexus in deadwind pass. During her time as guardian she fought an avatar of Sargeras and believed she killed him. In fact she had become possessed. Sargeras’ essence twisted her thoughts, driving even further from the council.

She refused to pass on the power of the guardian when her time was up, instead passing it on to her son, Medivh. Sargeras had moved onto him from the womb so he was corrupted from the start. Throughout his life he battled with the demon within, eventually driving him mad until his apprentice Khadgar was able to defeat him. As he died the guardian powers flooded out of his body, cursing the tower.

Any people who entered the tower became trapped, as ghostly guests forever. Over the years the curse became weaker and it was safe to enter. The kirin tor entered for ‘magical study’ and now demons have come seeking the book of Medivh, which they could use to summon their leader back to Azeroth at last.
