We encountered Vrykul in Northrend where they had abandoned their titanic heritage and joined the scourge. What are they doing in the broken isles?

The Vrykul were originally constructed by the titan keepers to defend their stronghold in Ulduar. They fought alongside the keepers to protect Azeroth from anything that threatened to corrupt her. They were present when the keeper Tyr defeated the evil dragon Galakrond and the dragon aspects were appointed. Ulduar is more than a stronghold, it is the prison of an old god, and they are patient enemies.

The old gods Yogg-saron eventually had its chance when the druids planted Vordrassil in the Grizzly Hills. The roots of the world tree burrowed so deep they pierced the prison of the god. Now able to seep its corruption into the surface world, it began the slow work of twisting and weakening the servants of the titans.

The leader of the keepers was Odyn, the old god couldn’t corrupt him, but they did get to his second in command Loken. As Odyn saw his army being undermined, with keepers becoming corrupted and the curse of flesh turning his Vrykul to flesh, he became determined to create a new force of worthy warriors, the Valarjar. To this end he came up with a plan to create the Val’kyr, unliving beings made to choose the worthy and raise them to his army.

When the other keepers tried to stop him, he split off from them and created the halls of valor in Stormheim along with Helya: the very much not willing first Val’kyr. In his absence the now corrupt Loken assumed control of Ulduar and set about dismantling its forces. As their leaders warred the Vrykul were left with the curse of flesh and no leadership.

The Vrykul abandoned their duties and separated into clans, spreading across Northrend. Some clans sided with king Ymiron and led to the exile of the humans, others remained loyal to the keepers. One clan in particular set out to find Stormheim and earn a place with Odyn’s Valarjar. Those who did were visited by the Val’kyr, who challenged them to prove their worth by a series of trials.

The first Val’kyr Helya, still wanted to break free of Odyn and someone was able to help. The new prime designate Loken came to Helya and made an offer, he would help her break free if she trapped Odyn in his halls. She was all too happy to help. With odyn contained Loken was free to do as he pleased in Northrend and Helya was free, but all those years being enslaved had left her very bitter, she set about undermining his Valarjar by damning Vrykul souls to Helheim.

Now the worthy Vrykul hope to be raised to the ranks of the Valajar through glorious battle, while the weak fear being damned to the Helarjar. The Vrykul of Stormheim never sided with Ymiron or the scourge, which is why most of them are far more reasonable towards us.
