The way into the Nighthold is about to open. Inside we will find the creation of the Nightborne’s arrogance, and the result of their leader’s cowardice.
As the war of the ancients gathered pace, the more distant reaches of the Elven Empire began to see the burning legion’s invasion was Azshara’s fault, and sought to protect themselves from the demons without suffering the queen’s revenge as their neighbnightours in Narthalas had.
The main city of the northern reaches was Suramar. It was the second city of the empire, and boasted the grand temple of Elune: the centre of the elve’s religion. The city also held a number of powerful arcane artefacts, including the pillars of creation. The legion wanted these world shaping relics and since they weren’t answering Azshara they attacked the city by opening a portal within their temple.

The very things they were after was the solution to the problem. The magi of Suramar used the relics to create a seal around the temple and push the demons out. It has remained corrupted to this day. With the portals sealed the elves and wild gods by now fighting alongside them managed the rout the legion from the city.
The city remained in danger however and despite the help they had retaking their home they decided they were too important to risk in the war. The city’s magi used one of the pillars of creation, the Eye of Amanthul, to create a font of power: the night well. After seeing the trouble the well of eternity had drawn to Azeroth they hid this one within the nighthold to contain its magic. Denizens of the city would gain power with the use of arcwine.
The magi then used the well to create a shield wall around the city, no living thing could pass through the barrier, meaning the city was safe from the legion. It also meant the people were trapped. When the sundering rocked the world and sunk land masses all around Suramar, the city itself was safe.

Much like the pandaren they hid safely away from the world for thousands of years, believing there to be no life left out there. Over the millennia the nightwell’s magic changed them from night elves into nightborne. They continued to live in peace until the legion came again.
This time the legion was different: even stronger and able to put an image of Gul’dan through their shield. The grand magistrix Elisande was intimidated this time, and despite her advisors trying to persuade her to fight, she submitted to Gul’dan and dropped the shield. Now the legion rules Suramar again, with access to one of the pillars of eternity within the nighthold.
